Golgotha: The Place Of The Skull.

1 Samuel 17:51 Therefore David ran and stood over the Philistine, took his (Goliath’s) sword and drew it out of its sheath and killed him, and cut off his head with it……”
…….57 “Then, as David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, Abner took him and brought him before Saul (in Jerusalem) with the head of the Philistine in his hand.”

Our Father’s heart is full of His Son, Jesus!  What He accomplished long ago on that hill called, “Mt. Calvary,” are spoken of over and over again, throughout the Bible.  This portion of scripture is no exception.  It contains beautiful pictures of Jesus and His finished work of redemption.
The Valley Of Elah.

According to the first three verses of this chapter, this historic battle geographically took place between “Sochoh and Azekah, in the Ephes Dammim,” on either side of the “Valley of Elah.”

Israel was drawn up in battle against their arch enemies, Philistines.  They stood on a mountain on one side, Israel stood on a mountain on the other side with the valley in between them.

Secrets In The Hebrew Language.

All Hebrew names of people, places, and things in the Bible have meaning and lead to deeper understanding of any passage you are studying. Sochoh, in Hebrew, means “Thorns; ” Azekah, means, “Strength of walls.”  Kinda sounds like they were caught between a rock and a hard place, doesn’t it?  That they were!

Ephes Damim in Hebrew literally means “Boundary of the bloods (plural),” and Elah means “Fear.”  The Holy Spirit, our Master Storyteller, is painting pictures for us again!  He wants us to know that when we get into a “Thorny situation” with our backs against the wall, down in the “Valley of fear,” we have a Savior. We have Jesus, the Greater David!

Verbal Abuse.
For 39 days straight, the giant Philistine, Goliath, had been hurling insults against God and His people.  His verbal abuse was heaped not only on the armies of Israel, but he boasted against their God, called Him out, and blasphemed His Name!  That was his first mistake!
His second was in underestimating the young, small champion God sent out to confront him.  David, whose name means “Beloved,” had picked up five smooth stones out of the brook which runs through the valley Elah Valley to this day.  Five is the number of grace!  (Wow!  He found grace!)
(For more on why he choose 5 stones, please follow the link below:
He put one of the stones into his shepherd’s sling, let it fly, and knocked the giant out in one shot.  He then ran over and cut off the head of Goliath with the giant’s sword, winning a great victory for Israel that day!
The Valley Of Fear.

Notice that you are drawn, “DOWN,” into the valley of fear from where you were, which is seated in heavenly places next to Jesus.  How are you drawn down there?  By giving heed to the taunts and lies of the enemy–your Goliaths.  Remain at rest, seated next to Jesus, and you’ll find you cannot not be drawn down into the valley of fear.”

Typologies.

Goliath is a typology of satan–our accuser.  It might interest you to know that he CANNOT cross the boundary of the blood (of Jesus).  His name in Hebrew is also very telling:  It means “Stripped, exile.”

This guy loved bronze!  He was wearing a helmet made of bronze, his spear was bronze, his Breastplate and all his armor were made of bronze, even his footwear was bronze.  Why?  Because he is a picture of the accusers of the brethren, like judge and jury.  Bronze in the Bible depicts “Judgment.” Well, he was one big picture of judgment from head to toe!

(For more on the meaning of bronze and some amazing revelations in both the Hebrew words and the letter themselves, please follow the link below:

Goliath was from the city of Gath which, in Hebrew, means “Winepress.”  It calls to mind the verse in Rev.19:15 it says that “Jesus Himself treads out the “winepress” of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God….Having stripped principalities and powers; He spoiled them.”
That’s our Jesus, the GREATER DAVID, defeating our Goliath (the devil), and taking away our reproach.  Now, we are no longer strangers and exiles, subject to God’s wrath.  We are heirs of the promises of God as beloved sons and daughters!

That’s what David did; he “Spoiled principalities and powers” by defeating them (Goliath and Co.) in the Name and power of the LORD of Hosts, making Goliath a “stripped exile,” carrying out judgment on him.

Shadow And Substance.

At the end of the chapter, you’ll notice it says that he carried Goliath’s head all the way to Jerusalem.  It was buried outside the city walls in a place which, much later, came to be known as, “The place of the skull.”

The place where this giant skull was buried outside of the gates of Jerusalem and came to be known as “Gol Goliath.”  Gol means, “Heap or pile.”  Later on, it was shortened to “Golgotha,” what we know as “The place of the skull.

Some 4,000 years later Jesus, the GREATER David, our giant killer, The Savior of the entire world, would die on a cross, thoroughly routing the greatest of all enemies; the serpent.

His cross would be erected directly over the place where Goliath’s head was buried.  Our Jesus, THE GREATER DAVID {BELOVED}, CRUSHED ONCE AND FOR ALL the he of the greater Goliath, i.e., the devil’s head, on that hill long ago known as:
