The Fourth Man

Psalm 103:1-5

1 “Bless the LORD, O my soul; And all that is within me, bless His holy name!
2 Bless the LORD, O my soul, And forget not all His benefits: 3 Who forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases,
4 Who redeems your life from destruction, Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies,

5 Who satisfies your mouth with good things, So that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.”

Read through the story of David’s life sometime. Whether in good times or in bad, he is always praising the Lord.  The Lord, The Faithful and True, always delivered him!
The Fiery Furnace.
Others, who came afterward, followed his example, like the three teenagers who were thrown into the fiery furnace.  Let’s follow the story.
“And he {Nebuchadnezzar} commanded certain mighty men of valor who were in his army to bind Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego, and cast them into the burning fiery furnace. Then these men were bound in their coats, their trousers, their turbans, and their other garments, and were cast into the midst of the burning fiery furnace.
Therefore, because the king’s command was urgent, and the furnace exceedingly hot, the flame of the fire killed those men who took up Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego. And these three men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego, fell down bound into the midst of the burning fiery furnace. Then King Nebuchadnezzar was astonished; and he rose in haste and spoke, saying to his counselors, “Did we not cast three men bound into the midst of the fire?” They answered and said to the king, “True, O king.” “Look!” he answered, “I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire; and they are not hurt, and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.” Daniel 3:20-25
What an amazing event!  The fire was so hot, seven times hotter in fact.  Even the men who tossed them into it were killed.  But not the three teenagers.  They were unharmed and their clothing intact.  The only things that were destroyed in the fire were their bonds!  Why?  Because the 4th “Man” showed up…..JESUS!  He sets your free from that which binds you and preserves you in the midst of the fire.
God Honors Faith.
Before they were tossed into the furnace, King Nebu asked them if it was true that they refused to bow down to his image.  He added that no god could save them from his hand.  This was their response in Daniel 3:16-18:
“Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego answered and said to the king, “O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter. If that is the case, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and He will deliver us from your hand, O king. But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we do not serve your gods, nor will we worship the gold image which you have set up.”
They confessed faith in the God of the universe, that He WILL deliver them:  Not maybe; not perhaps, but surely.  But even if He did not, they still were not going to comply.
God honors that kind of faith.  He shows up!  He NEVER fails those who believe He’s a good God, who expect Him to save, to deliver, and to do good to them.
Praise Him For He Is Good!
It is good to praise the Lord in everything, especially when going through a fiery trial.  Like them, because Jesus is ALWAYS with us, you and I will always come out unscathed, not even smelling like smoke.
Oh, yes:  PRAISE WORKS!
In the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit would come and go because their sins could only be covered.  Such is not the case with you and I.  We have THE ONE Who NEVER leaves us or forsakes us because our sins are cleansed.  Because of Jesus, the Holy Spirit can reside forever IN us.
We ALWAYS have with us The fourth Man, JESUS!
