Covenant, “Birít” [ברית]: The Story Of David Part 6.

I Samuel 18:1-4
Now when he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. 2 Saul took him that day, and would not let him go home to his father’s house anymore.
3 Then Jonathan and David MADE A COVENANT, because he loved him as his own soul. 4 And Jonathan took off the robe that was on him and gave it to David, with his armor, even to his sword and his bow and his belt.

(David and Jonathan cut a covenant.)

After David killed Goliath, he was congratulated by King Saul. While he was there in the kings tent, he met the king’s son, Jonathan. They would become more than just friends; more like brothers because of their great love for one another. They loved each other so much that they CUT A COVENANT with each other. 😮

Covenants.

What does it mean to “Cut a Covenant?”  In ancient Israel, as well as in other cultures around the world, covenants were said to be “Cut” with another person, tribe or nation.  Why “Cut?”

You see, unlike a contract, covenants involve the shedding of blood to seal it.  In the process of making a covenant with someone, each person or tribal leader made a small incision on their wrist and join them together so that their blood would mingle.  It now flowed together as one.

👉🏻 THIS IS WHY MARRIAGE IS A COVENANT, NOT MERELY A CONTRACT, 👈🏻 as some would have you believe. They want to call it a contract so they can “Redefine” it to fit an evil agenda.

Change Of Position.

In the process of cutting a covenant, each took off their respective outer garments and exchanged them, indicating a change of positions. They exchanged their respective armaments and wore the other persons gear, indicating your enemies now become their enemies, and visa versa. You now fought mutual battles of your now mutual enemies.

Here’s the clincher: If you were in a financial bind, the other became liable for your debt! Very handy!  But beyond the natural description of covenants, the Hebrew language itself gives us an even deeper revelation!

Secrets In The Hebrew Language.

Hebrew is a language of picture writing, like Chinese.  The letters God puts together to spell words tell a story of their own. They also give us information that we’d  never find in any definition and a glimpse of things from God’s perspective.
The Hebrew word for covenant is “Birít, pronounced “Bîr-eet.” This is its Hebrew spelling:  [ברית]
The word “pictures” are as follows:
[ב] Bet: House
[ר] Resh: Head, think, meditate.
[bet and resh together [בר] spell “bar-Son.”
[י] Yod is that teeny, tiny little line. It means “Open hand,” as in the open hand of Jesus that was nailed to the cross. It also means, “Power,” and is used as the number 10. As such, it is also a picture of the Ten Commandments and the tithe.
[ת] Tav is a picture of the cross,

The word “pictures” in “Birít” tell us:  “Covenants begin with The Son: JESUS, and are sealed by the power of His sacrifice on the cross.”  This is Cutting A Covenant.

Ruth.
The word for covenant is closely related to Ruth’s name, who was a Moabitess.  As such, she was disqualified to enter the congregation of Israel by the Law covenant.  However, she entered the congregation because of the Grace Covenant, by faith.  She is even included in the lineage of our Lord Jesus Christ!

Her name in Hebrew is spelled, [רות] and is derived from the Hebrew word for covenant! 😮

You and I, Church, are blood brothers with Jesus because He shed His blood for us!  God, the Father, “cut a covenant” with His man–the perfect Man, Jesus, Who represented all of us to the Father.  Being made in the likeness of sinful man, yet without sin, and taking the form of a servant, He humbled Himself unto death; even death on a cross. His shed blood FOREVER SEALED OUR COVENANT!

Now, when we accept His priceless gift, we wear His garment of righteousness and share His high position, seated next to our Father in heaven.  Our position is no longer as slaves or servants, but sons and daughters.  Our battles now are not ours but His.

THE BATTLE BELONGS TO THE LORD!  HALLELUIA!

You and I stand forever secure in Christ because He, representing us to our Father, has CUT A COVENANT!
