Peter 3:18
18 “…but grow in the GRACE and KNOWLEDGE of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
To Him be the glory both now and forever. Amen.”

It’s natural, I suppose, to reason out spiritual truths according to our human understanding, particularly on the topic of spiritual growth.  After all, we are human beings.  But are we teaching what the Bible actually says?

Spiritual Infantcy.

New Christians are taught about God’s Grace and His love for us, but they are often told that this truth is only “Basic Christianity.”  It is in learning about God’s Law and “ho-o-o-oliness” is deep, they say.  But according to Paul, the exact opposite is true. God uses the nation of Israel to demonstrate what spiritual immaturity really is.

When she was in her infancy, spiritually speaking, Israel was given the Law on Mtl Sinai.  The Jewish people were subject to it for 1500 years.  Paul referred to her at that stage as “Nepiós,” which is Greek for “INFANT.”  Think of it like being in kindergarten, learning your A-B-C’s.  One thing is certain:  According to Paul, being under law most definitely is NOT spiritual maturity.

Law: Milk; Grace Solid Food.

The law was GIVEN by Moses; Grace and truth CAME by Jesus Christ.  Now, because of Christ’s finished work, we are now called, “Huiós,” which in Greek means, “Mature sons.” We are weaned from the baby’s milk bottle

THE LAW. You are able to partake of solid food, i.e. Bread and wine:  Communion!

Think of it this way: If you, as an adult, went to the home of your friend and that person told you not to play with the knives because they are sharp or to stay away from the stove because it was hot, you’d probably be offended.  As an adult, you do not need to be warned about such things.  You already know.  Children, on the other hand, do need to be protected from danger. They need the “law,” so to speak.

Unskilled In Righteousness.

Hebrews 5:13 says, “For everyone who partakes only of milk is UNSKILLED IN THE WORD OF RIGHTEOUSNESS, FOR HE IS A BABE.”

Paul is describing how to recognize who are spiritual babies in this verse.  He calls the Law, “Milk.”  Those who partake only of “Milk” are “Unskilled in the word of righteousness.”

Righteousness is not an action you perform; it is a gift you receive.  It seems counterintuitive to our finite minds, but it’s true nevertheless.  You see, man wants to make it all about man.  We want to be able to “Do” something to merit our salvation. The very word “Merit” indicates that righteousness is not a gift but a reward. Church, if we could be good enough or do good enough, Jesus died for nothing.

The truth is, there is NOTHING to “Do.”  Jesus has already “DONE IT ALL.” IT IS FINISHED! Salvation is Jesus…..plus NOTHING.

God Is Really That Good!

That is why it is so important to always go according to the scriptures and not try to use our finite, puny minds to reason out spiritual truths.  Grace is not logical to us.  It goes against our nature.  Man cannot make rhyme or reason out of it because it goes against the grain, like something too good to be true.

Can God really be that good?  YES, HE IS!  He is always doing what we least expect.  He is always going out of His way to use the weak things of this world to confound the so-called, “Wise.” He will anoint the person with no qualifications to do the job at hand so that all the glory goes to Him Who gave it.

Low, Lower, Lowest.

The Apostle Paul at one time mercilessly persecuted the church.  He even stood by, applauding the stoning of righteous Stephen.  He is our best example of spiritual growth.

After his conversion, Paul became THE GREATEST APOSTLE OF ALL TIME. Yet in his own estimation he considered himself the least of not only the apostles but of all the saints!  In one of his earliest epistles, according to the date of it’s writing, he says, “For I am the LEAST of the apostles, who am not worthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.” 1 Corinthians 15:9

After he had grown a bit more in the Lord, he makes this declaration in Ephesians 3:8. “To me, who am LESS THAN THE LEAST OF ALL THE SAINTS, this grace was given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ.”  The more he grew, the lower his estimation of himself.   Yet the estimation of God’s grace toward him greatly increased!  Here, he not only considered himself least among all the apostles, but the least of the whole church combined.–In an even later-written epistle, 1 Timothy, when he had grown even more, look what he wrote in chapter 1, verse 15

“This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, OF WHOM I AM CHIEF.”

Decreasing Estimation.

Wow! That’s about as low on the totem pole as you can go. The more he grew in the Lord, the less he thought of himself and the more in awe of Grace he became. Even the meaning of his name tells a story. Paul means “humble.” He’s kinda like the Moses of the New Testament, whom God called the most “Humble” of all His people,

You and I often see our sins, our lack, our failings.  God, on the other hand, sees ONLY His Son’s perfect work in us. He doesn’t look at you to evaluate you; He looks at your PERFECT LAMB, your Glorious High Priest, Jesus, Who is forever righteous!

So don’t get all down and discouraged at your own faults and failings.  See Jesus.  See His grace. God is not being just and righteous to us in forgiving of all our sins.  He is righteous and just to His Precious Son Who, was punished for ALL our sins.  He perfectly finished the work at the cross!

Right Kind Of Growth.

Don’t get me wrong, there is growth, yes.  You must increase in the knowledge of how great is the depth and breadth and width and height of God’s marvelous love and grace toward you who have received His priceless gift.  But you must understand that, spiritually speaking, YOU WERE COMPLETE IN CHRIST THE INSTANT YOU BEGAN YOUR CHRISTIAN WALK.

The greater your realization of your completeness and the totality of your righteousness in Him, the more you’ll fall in love with Jesus.  That’s the message of Luke 7:47–“He who is forgiven much will love Him much.”

[…] Hebrews 10:19-22 19 Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a NEW AND LIVING WAY which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh, 21 and having a High Priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.” Jesus said that we can now come to Him by a new and living way…..as opposed to the old and dying way.  That’s what the Old Covenant was:  The more you came to God, the greater your chances of dying.  Under the New Covenant, the more you come, THE MORE YOU LIVE! Yom Kippur:   The Day Of Atonement. In ancient Israel, the high priest went into the Holy of Holies once a year on the Day of Atonement: Yom Kippur, to offer sacrifices for the whole nation of Israel.  If it was acceptable to God, their sins would be COVERED for THE NEXT TWELVE MONTHS.  They would have bumper crops, healthy children and favor on all they did. Fearful Undertaking. But…..Before he could enter the Holy of Holies, he had to properly prepare himself.  It was a very serious and fearful undertaking! Just prior to approaching the Mercy Seat he had to sprinkle blood BEFORE THE ARK SEVEN TIMES, then ONE TIME ON TOP OF THE ARK, between the cherubim. No doubt he entered the Holy of Holies with not a little fear and trepidation!  Rabbinical tradition says that they actually tied a cord around one of the ankles of the high priest lest his sacrifice be unacceptable and he dropped dead.  You see, they couldn’t go inside and get him; they had to pull him out!  Imagine what the next guy in line was thinking.  He was probably terrified! (High priest sprinkles one drop of blood on top of the Ark.) Why Seven Times? Why did he sprinkle blood SEVEN TIMES before the ark? If you remember, way back in chapter 1 of Job, the devil used to come and present himself before God along with the good angels. “WHAT!?” you ask.  Why was he allowed to be there in the first place? Because when Adam sinned, he in effect handed the “keys” over to the devil, in effect. That place before the Ark, which represents the throne of God, was initially Adam’s place.  When he committed high treason, he forfeited it to the devil.  That’s why, by default, satan was able to come before God and complain about Job.  He got Adam’s place when the fall happened. But HALLELUJAH!  He’s outta there because Jesus bought back our forfeited inheritance!  He sprinkled His blood of His PERFECT SACRIFICE and cleansed that soiled spot.  He has become our Mercy Seat and sits forever on the Throne of God, the heavenly Ark.  The devil cannot come before God anymore and accuse you. Now we, as believers, don’t have anything to fear because of the cross of Jesus!  That’s why we can come boldly before God’s throne but the blood of Jesus has not merely COVERED our sins for one year:  Ours are forgiven and COMPLETELY CLEANSED, once and for all! When Jesus died, our Father couldn’t rip that temple veil from top to bottom fast enough!  Now there is no more separation between us and God!  HALLELUIA! (Temple veil torn in two from top to bottom.) The Dangers Of Mixing Law And Grace. Under the Old Covenant, the more often you came to God, the greater your chances of dying. This is why mixing Law and Grace is so deadly. It kills people slowly by keeping them under condemnation. What does it mean to mix law and grace?  It is teaching that we are saved by grace but must please God by our performance.   Believe it or not, such preachers do not have the proper respect for the law.  They tell you to do your best and if you fail…..and of course you will…..you just go to God and ask Him to forgive you. But here’s the problem, Church:  IT DOESN’T WORK THAT WAY.  If you want to please God by your performance you must obey ALL HIS COMMANDMENTS ALL THE TIME IN THOUGHT, WORD AND DEED.  NO half way, NO do-your-best-I’ll-forgive-the-rest deal.  Uh, uh.  It’s all…..OR NOTHING. We Need A Savior! Now do you understand why we need a Savior?  NOBODY CAN DO THAT.  The only One Who could (and did) was Jesus, and He credits us with His prefect law keeping the very first nano second we are born again!  It is good for all eternity!  The New Covenant is Jesus plus NOTHING. Under the New Covenant, we come to Jesus in a new and living way: THE MORE WE COME THE MORE WE LIVE!  You don’t anymore confess your sins to God in order to be forgiven:You confess them to Him BECAUSE YOU ALREADY ARE. The saddest thing in the body of Christ today is a lack of understanding of how completely clean the blood of Jesus has cleansed us. People are saying things like, “You must do this, you must do that,” in order to be pleasing to God.  They don’t understand thatRIGHTEOUSNESS IS A GIFT; not an action you perform. Your Choice. Make up your mind!  Did Jesus forgive all your sins or not? ALL MEANS ALL. Do we have EVERLASTING RIGHTEOUSNESS or not?  You can’t have it both ways. Either we are saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ…..OR…..We are made righteous by our works. PICK ONE. If our righteousness is eternal, can we lose it? Kind of a DUMB QUESTION, don’t you think?  If you can do something to lose it then IT’S NOT ETERNAL.   That would mean that what the first Adam did was greater than what the second Adam, Jesus, did! AS IF!!! Eternal Life Somewhere. You see, your spirit is eternal.  Why?  Because it is God’s very breath.  That’s why you will continue on somewhere, in either eternal life or eternal death in hell.   When God created Adam, he was like a lifeless manaquin until God breathed His very own eternal spirit into Him.   But when man fell in the garden, HE DIED SPIRITUALLY.  Your spirit, just like Adam’s is eternal, too.  It will continue on. What many don’t understand is that we are all born the same way:  Spiritually dead.  Accepting Jesus Christ as your Savior and Lord RESURRECTS YOUR SPIRIT.  Then and only then can you will live forever with Him. If that doesn’t happen, if you don’t become a resurrected spirit, it will continue on after your physical body dies in a place where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth, where the worm never dies and the fire is never quenched. That is eternal death. YOU DON’T WANT THAT,  do you? This does not apply to little children, however.  Though your precious little baby is born this way, for anyone who’s lost a child, they go directly back to Jesus!  Their sin nature is not counted against them because they are not of an age where they can understand these things and make a choice. Can You Lose Your Salvation? In the Old Testament, forgiveness was by offering the blood of bulls and goats.  It wasTEMPORARY.  It had to be repeated every year.  New Testament forgiveness is by the precious blood of Jesus applied ONLY ONE TIME; once for all time. His blood gives us anEVERLASTING RIGHTEOUSNESS.  So, no:  YOU CANNOT LOSE IT. You are complete in Christ, as the scriptures say, the instant you are born again.  Why are you trying to get to the finish line as if Jesus did not finish the work?  Either He finished it or He didn’t. Spiritual Growth. Another area of confusion is of spiritual growth.  Yes, we grow, but it’s in the area of knowing how complete your completeness is, how forgiven you are, how you are completely righteous in God’s eyes by the blood of Jesus.  The brand newest believer is as complete in Christ as the most seasoned Christian from day one.
