Shalom. [שלום]

John 14:27
27 “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world gives, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”

“Peace” seems to be in short supply in these troubled times.  In His high priestly prayer above, however, Jesus bequeathed to us His peace.  You see, more than anything, He wants us to be in perfect peace; to rest in Him; to be not afraid.  In fact, 365 times throughout the Bible are the words, “Fear not; don’t be afraid,” or words to that effect.

Why is it so important to God that we be at peace and unafraid?  How can we get to that place, especially in light of all the evil and chaos in the world today?  Some of the answer lies in the definition of the word, “Shalom.”  But, incredibly, God has given us even more clues in the Hebrew letters of their word for Peace. 😍

Definition Of Shalom.
The Hebrew word for peace is, “Shalom.”   We don’t get a real sense of the meaning of the word in English, but in Hebrew, it is a very rich word. It means much so more than simply to be peaceful or to have peace of mind.

Strong’s Concordance defines it this way: “Shalom means completeness, wholeness, health, peace, welfare, safety, soundness, tranquility, prosperity, perfectness, fullness, rest, harmony, the absence of agitation or discord.”  Prosperity also includes finances.  However, Jesus wants also us to have peace and prosperity in every area: In our health, relationships, marriage, workplace, and so on.

Shalom comes from the root word, “Shelem, which means, “Completeness, soundness, welfare, peace.”  In modern Hebrew, the word, “Shelem,” means “To pay for,” and a related word, “Shulam” means “To be fully paid.”

Our peace was FULLY paid for in the body of our Savior, Jesus, on the cross.  In fact, His death was an far and above an OVERPAYMENT!   In essence, what Jesus said by His death is “Aní meSheləm:  “I Am your payment!”  HALLELUJAH! 🙌🏻💖

Remember the storm which threatened to capsize the boat in which He and His disciples were traveling?  Well, it wasn’t just a little breezy:  IT WAS A MEGA STORM!  But Jesus, as cool as can be, stood to His feet and uttered one word:  “SHALOM.”

Immediately there was, according to the Greek text, a “Great calm.”  Actually, it was a MEGA calm!  Not only did the storm dissipate instantly but the sea was perfectly calm. No wonder the disciples were shocked!

Secrets in the Hebrew Language.
Now let’s examine the spelling of the word.  Hebrew reads from right to left and is a form of picture writing, like Chinese. These pictures are very consistent.  The “pictures” God puts together to form words give us an even deeper understanding of what Jesus means by “Peace.”

Shalom is spelled like this:
[שלום]

The letters from right to left are:
[ש] Shin = Shaddai (Almighty God)
[ל] Lamed = learn
[ו]  Vav = nail (Jesus was nailed to the cross)
[ם] Mem = Holy Spirit

The word pictures tell us this story:
“The more you LEARN (lamed) about how much the Almighty God (shin), the Son, and the Holy Spirit (mem) love and care for you, as evidenced by Jesus’ sacrifice, (vav) the greater your measure of SHALOM.”

AND…

“The Learner ([ל]-you and I), is surrounded by God on every side: El Shaddai, (shin) Jesus (vav) and the Holy Spirit (mem). What greater peace can you have than that!? ♥️
