John 21:11
11 “Simon Peter went up and dragged the net to land, full of large fish, One Hundred and fifty-three; and although there were so many, the net was not broken.”

What’s the big deal with the number “153” in this passage? We’re going to see through the course of this, and the other three, articles in this series that there are many things about Hebrew, especially numbers, that are absolutely astonishing. No wonder it is God’s language of choice!
–
No Insignificant Details.
There are no details in scripture that are arbitrary or insignificant. NONE. Numbers in the Bible are a perfect example of this. The Holy Spirit uses them, among many other things, to tell us the incomparable story of Jesus and His work of redemption. He inspired His Jewish secretaries who wrote what they were told, repeating His timeless story over and over again, pointing out wonderful and important truths to teach, encourage, and bless us!

Hebrew Numbers.
One of the most unique things about Hebrew is that they don’t use numbers like we do here in the West. They use the letters of their alphabet. It is also a language of picture writing, like Chinese. Each letter has a numerical value, a picture associated with it as well as a color and a musical note.
King David, who wrote most of the psalms, could actually play them on his harp by following the letters. His instrument, or “Kinor,” had 22 strings, the same as the number of letters in their alphabet. He could literally play the music of the Psalms by using the letters as his musical notes! All of these things lead to greater meaning and deeper understanding of whatever text you are reading or studying. Let’s dig in!

3: The Number of Manifestation.
#1. Jesus rose (was manifested) from the dead on the 3rd day.
#2. On the 3rd day, God commanded dry land to appear (manifest) out of the waters; a picture of resurrection.

Throughout the Bible, there are many occurrences of the number 3. But it’s not merely the actual number itself. It could be some event or anything of the sort that is mentioned 3 times. This applies to all other numbers as well.
God does a lot of things in three’s. For example: We have a Triune God: One God, three persons. Time is divided into three parts: Past, present, and future. Man, whom He created, tri-parteid: Body, soul, and spirit. There are three states of matter: Solid, liquid, and gas…..well, you get the idea.

5: The Number of Grace.
5 is often said to be the “Number of grace.” Here’s why:
#1. The 5th time David’s name was mentioned, Saul said of David, “he hath found favour (i.e. grace) in my sight,” 1 Sam. 16:22
#2. The 5th time Ruth’s name is mentioned, she said in Chapter 2:2 ” And Ruth the Moabitess said unto Naomi, ‘Let me now go to the field, and glean ears of corn after him in whose sight I shall find grace.’ “
As you can see in the picture of the Hebrew alphabet above, Hei [ה], the number circled in red, is the 5th letter as well as the number “Five.” That’s why we say, “Five is considered the NUMBER of GRACE!

Now this next number, “17,” is really exciting. It is known as the number of victory!
“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?” He (Paul) by the Holy Spirit, goes on to mention 17 things that cannot separate us from God’s love.
#2. Joseph was 17 years old when he was sold into slavery. His whole story started on a victorious note in God’s eyes!
#3. David also slew Goliath when he was 17 years old.
# 4. Jesus rose from the dead on the 17th day of the month of Nissan.
But the best one is below:

This next number, the one mentioned in the opening scripture, is really, REALLY COOL!
–
The Number 153.
#5. After Jesus rose from the dead, He went down to the Sea of Galilee where the disciples had been fishing all night but had caught nothing. Jesus told them in John 21:6, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast, and now they were not able to draw it in because of the multitude of fish.”
–
There were so many fish, THEY HAD TO DRAG THE NET TO SHORE! 😳
11 “Simon Peter went up and dragged the net to land, full of large fish, one hundred and fifty-three;” Let’s do a little math, shall we?

Some Very Interesting Math.
You saw in the opening passage the story of the great catch of fish. It is no accident that the Holy Spirit made mention of the number of fish they caught. Whenever He does that, pay close attention: He has something to tell us that will really bless and encourage. It is further proof that NOTHING in the Bible is arbitrary.

Why God Changed the Jewish Calendar.
The best I have saved for last!
You recall that the ark rested on Mt. Ararat, I’m sure. Well, it settled there on the 17th day of the 7th month. Jesus rose from the dead on the 17th day of the first month, which, believe it or not, is the exact same day!

17 = VICTORY!!!

AWESOME GOD, AWESOME SAVIOR! THANK YOU, JESUS!
Very interesting … I love this site. If I may … I have just one thing I’d like to mention; you reference #1. Rom. 9:35-39
“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?” He (Paul) by the Holy Spirit, goes on to mention 17 things that cannot separate us from God’s love.
I always look up verses and I realized that the actual verse is Romans 8:35-39. Chapter 9 doesn’t go up that high.
Blessings in your continued endeavors.
